The Adventure of the Abbey Grange – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
* This book is available at LoDingo.com *
Holmes wakes Dr. Watson up early one morning to rush to a murder scene at the Abbey Grange near Chislehurst. Sir Eustace Brackenstall has been killed, apparently by a gang of burglars. Inspector Stanley Hopkins believes that it was the well-known Randall gang, a father and two sons.
Upon arrival at the Abbey Grange, Lady Brackenstall is found resting with a purple swelling over one eye, the result of a blow during the foregoing night’s business. There are also two red spots on her arm. Her maid later tells Holmes that Sir Eustace inflicted those with a hatpin.
Lady Brackenstall tells Holmes that her marriage was not happy. Sir Eustace Brackenstall was a violent, abusive alcoholic. Moreover, Lady Brackenstall found it hard to adjust to life in England after the freedom that she enjoyed in her native Australia, which she left only 18 months ago. She was married for about a year.
The Adventure of the Abbey Grange, one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short storieswritten by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is one of 13 stories in the cycle collected as The Return of Sherlock Holmes.
About the Narrator
David Ian Davies is a talented actor and acclaimed dramatic reader that has given voice to the popular Star Wars video games and many classic stories, including works penned by Shakespeare, HG Wells and Oscar Wilde. His Sherlockian audio performances are arguably his best to date, with reviewers raving about his truly amazing skill in bringing the stories to life.
“…to refer to David’s Sherlock Holmes productions as simply dramatic readings is a major understatement, as he brings a wonderful range of distinctly unique voices into play as he essays each of the characters, creating a marvelously layered and rich listening experience that showcases Arthur Conan Doyle’s masterful use of language.”

The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
* This book is available at LoDingo.com *
When a young man’s recent comrade-in-arms becomes strangely inaccessible, Sherlock Holmes comes to his aid. But the more deeply the detective investigates the missing man’s whereabouts, the more adamant become the measures of his immediate family to block all attempts to communicate with the soldier’s friend. The father insists his son has left on a trip around the world, and the people in the surrounding town seem to support the father’s story. But there is something amiss, and Holmes shall get to the truth, whatever the consequences.
This Sherlock Holmes story is unusual as it is completely without Holmes’s usual companion, Dr. Watson. Holmes tells this story himself in the first person.

The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
* This book is available at LoDingo.com *
A banker, Mr. Alexander Holder of Streatham makes a loan of £50,000 to a socially prominent client, who leaves the Beryl Coronet — one of the most valuable public possessions in existence — as security. Holder feels that he must not leave this rare and precious piece of jewellery in his personal safe at the bank, and so he takes it home with him to lock it up there. He is awoken in the night by a noise, enters his dressing room, and is horrified to see his son Arthur with the coronet in his hands, apparently trying to bend it. Holder’s niece Mary comes at the sound of all the shouting and, seeing the damaged coronet, faints dead away. Three beryls are missing from it. In a panic, he travels to see Holmes, who agrees to take the case.
The case against Arthur seems rather damning, yet Holmes is not convinced of his guilt. Why has Arthur clammed up? Why is he refusing to give a statement of any kind? Could any other people in the household be involved, such as the staff, or Mary? Could some visitor, such as the maid’s wooden-legged boyfriend, or Arthur’s rakish friend Sir George Burnwell, have something to do with what happened to the coronet? The failure to resolve the case will result in Mr. Holder’s dishonour, and a national scandal.

Shoscombe Old Place – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
* This book is available at LoDingo.com *
Evidence of murder, ransacked ancient mummies, giving away a beloved dog, and a horse race upon which a man’s life and future depend are just four of the elements of this Holmes story, making it one of the most memorable (and chilling) cases in the Sherlockian Canon.
Head trainer John Mason from Shoscombe Old Place, a racing stable in Berkshire, comes to Holmes about his master, Sir Robert Norberton. Mason thinks he has gonemad. Sir Robert’s sister, Lady Beatrice Falder owns Shoscombe, but it will revert to her late husband’s brother when she dies. The stable has
a horse, Shoscombe Prince, who Sir Robert hopes will win the Derby. He would be out of debt if that actually happened.
Mason is not quite sure what he wants Holmes to investigate, but a number of odd changes have happened at the stable:
- Whyhas Lady Beatrice suddenly forgone her usual habit of stopping to greet her favourite horse? Why does she just ride on by in her carriage?
- Why has Sir Robert become so wild-eyed lately?
- Why has he given his sister’s dog away to a neighbourhood innkeeper?
- Why does he go to the old crypt at night, and who is that man that he meets there?
- Why have burnt human bones been found in the furnace at Shoscombe?
The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place, is the last of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and is
one of 12 stories in the cycle collected as The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes.

The Adventure of Black Peter - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
* This audio book is available from LoDingo.com *
Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of Black Peter
Author: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Narrator: David Ian Davies
Forest Row in the Weald is the scene of a gruesome harpoon murder, and a young police inspector, Stanley Hopkins, asks Holmes, whom he greatly admires as a mentor, for some help. Holmes has already determined that it would take a great deal of strength and skill to run a man through with a harpoon and embed it in the wall behind him besides.
Peter Carey, the 50-year-old victim and former master of the Sea Unicorn of Dundee, was a most unpleasant man, especially when he was drunk. He had a reputation for being violent, even having been prosecuted once for assaulting the local vicar. His daughter is actually glad that he is dead. She and her mother have endured years of abuse from the old whaler and sealer, who moreover had some remarkably peculiar habits. He did not sleep in the family house, but in an outhouse that he built some distance from the house, and which he decorated to look like a sailor’s cabin on a ship. This is where he was found harpooned. Hopkins could find no footprints or other physical evidence.

A Scandal in Bohemia by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
* This audio book is available from LoDingo.com *
Sherlock Holmes
A Scandal in Bohemia
Author: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Narrator: David Ian Davies
Holmes is visited by a masked gentleman introducing himself as Count Von Kramm, an agent for a wealthy client, but Holmes quickly deduces that he is in fact Wilhelm Gottsreich Sigismond von Ormstein, Grand Duke of Cassel-Felstein, the hereditary King of Bohemia. The King admits this, tearing off his mask. (Actually, the Habsburg Emperors were also Kings of Bohemia and there was no separate dynasty; Doyle chose to place an imaginary king at an existing country, rather than create a whole imaginary country such as Ruritania).
It transpires that the King is engaged to Clotilde Lothman von Saxe-Meningen, a young Scandinavian princess, but the King’s potential in-laws-to-be would have a very low opinion of him if any evidence of his former liaison with an opera singer named Irene Adler, originally from New Jersey, were ever revealed to them. Unfortunately, that is what the lady herself is threatening to do, apparently not, though, for monetary gain, for the King’s agents have already tried to buy the evidence. They have also broken into Miss Adler’s house to find it.
Set in 1888, this Sherlock Homes story was the first of Arthur Conan Doyle’s 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories to be published in The Strand Magazine and the first Sherlock Holmes story illustrated by Sidney Paget.

A Case of Identity - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
* This audio book is available from LoDingo.com *
Sherlock Holmes
A Case of Identity
Author: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Narrator: David Ian Davies
Miss Mary Sutherland, angry and beside herself with feelings of loss, asks Sherlock Holmes to solve the sudden, mysterious disappearance of a shy and attentive man she has grown to love upon the very day they were to be married.
Set in 1888 “A Case of Identity” is one of the 56 short Sherlock Holmes stories and is the third story in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
The story revolves around the case of Miss Mary Sutherland, a woman with a substantial income from the interest on a fund set up for her. She is engaged to a quiet Londoner who has recently disappeared. Sherlock Holmes’s detective powers are barely challenged as this turns out to be quite an elementary case for him, much as it puzzles Watson.
